Events and Information about January 2012

Year 2012 is a very interesting year cause of the various beliefs that cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on December 21, 2012. Some people believe that this will be the end of the world. The date, December 21, 2012, is regarded as the end-date of the 5,125 year long cycle of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, also called the Mayan Calendar. A New Age interpretation of the transformative events that are supposed to happen is that Earth and its inhabitants will undergo a positive physical and spiritual transformation, marking 2012 as the beginning of a new and better era, so it's not all bad.

2012 is a leap year starting on a Sunday in the Gregorian calendar, and is the 2012th year of the Anno Domini or Common Era designation. 2012 has been declared as the International Year of Cooperatives by the UN General Assembly. By doing this the UN General Assembly hopes to highlight the contribution of cooperatives to socio-economic development, social integration and poverty reduction. The year 2012 has also been designated as the Alan Turing Year, to celebrate the famous mathematician Alan Turing, as well as the International Year of Sustainable Energy.

When it comes to the month of January, it is the first month of the Gregorian Calendar, and it is one of seven months to have 31 days. The first day of January is called New Year's Day. January was one of two months not being in the first Roman Calendar. January starts on the same day of the week as October in common years, and starts on the same day of the week as April and July in leap years. In a common year, January ends on the same day of the week as February and October, and ends on the same day of the week as July in a leap year. Zodiac signs for people born in the calendar month of January would be Capricorn or Aquarius.
